This year I wrote and posted:

This time I'll be fair and only include stuff posted in 2019.

4 drabbles, 5 oneshots, 3 chapter fics, and 1 WIP.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?

This is definitely the most fic I've ever posted in a single year! (In 2018 I only posted 8,539 words on AO3!) I barely posted stuff before 2017, despite writing fic since I was Literally Eight. A lot of that is having more confidence, being older and not giving a shit, determination to put my interpretation of characters/ships out in the world, and my supportive friends.

I tend to average 150k a year writing, including my personal stuff that never leaves my harddrive, sometimes more (especially in college, F for that productive time in my life). I wrote about 160k in 2019 according to my Get Your Words Out tracker.

The real miracle and the thing I'm proudest of was actually finishing WIPs! I haven't done that since 2013.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?

The 100 and Bungou Stray Dogs! I did both for challenges where I didn't want to offer ZE and two neat little fics came out. Octavia is my baby and the Blake sibs are my children so The 100 fic was a remix of Redrikki's "Born to Float," which was a gen fic for the Blakes. BSD is Kouyo+Kyouka gen because I love them too. It was nice to do non-ZE stuff.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?

For cuteness, "Hollow Body Weather." I'm really happy with the fluffy romance novel aspects and the hurt/comfort, it reminds me of my friend D, and I love Carlos/Aoi so writing a fic where they do nothing but cook and cope was Soothing, especially as I was coming down from a mixed episode as I was editing it. (Fun fact: I wrote it in one week during a mixed episode, and the 'Aoi getting a blood transfusion' scene is based on the actual blood transfusion I got in August! I took a pic too. It looks just like a Twizzler going into your arm.)

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

I remixed a fic this year! I was terrified! I did not screw everything up! I did Redrikki's "Born to Float" for The 100 and they were very gracious in their response. It was for Remix Revival on DW, and I learned I like remixing.

Your best story of this year:

I'm gonna say "Man of three fears [...]" because it was a creative challenge that I think I pulled off well, I got to write a mystery, and I think my Junpei writing was on-point.

Your most popular story of this year:

Not including WIPs from pre-2019, as they include stats from 2017 and 2018.

By kudos: "Your Warmth, I Felt" (which is predictable because C-Team OT3)
By comments: "Hollow Body Weather" (the kudos to comments ratio on this one is hilarious, I think because it's just me and D chatting and giggling in them)
By bookmarks: "Your Warmth, I Felt"
By subscriptions: "Smoke, Mirrors" (WTF, I didn't expect anyone to read this)

Story of yours most under-appreciated by the universe, in your opinion:

This is honestly a hard one, as I try to avoid dwelling on things like this. I'll just say if I feel like a story was under-appreciated, it was because I didn't manage my expectations well enough. Fandom is fickle! It doesn't mean you did a bad job.

Most fun story to write:

"Fall On Your Knees" was pleasant and easy to write. I gave myself permission to let go of several specific hang-ups I have and just write a gift I thought my giftee would like. I think the fic benefited greatly from it, plus I got to write the Kurashikis doing face masks and Akane teasing Aoi about his crush.

Story with the single sexiest moment:

Carlos bathing Aoi in "Hollow Body Weather." I love anything with baths, plus cathartic "Aoi letting himself enjoy human touch again after experiencing torture" and the trust he places in Carlos' hands is very sensual to me.

Most “Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you” story:

Pick: Poisoning Aoi with strychnine in "Daffodil," decapitating Sean in "Crashing," or the torture recovery bits in "Hollow Body Weather." My girlfriend would say these are all fairly tame for me, and I don't say that to be edgy but because it makes me laugh. I don't set out...to do this...

Story that shifted your own perceptions of the characters:

"Daffodil" probably? The Fields are arcane to me and being forced to write their POVs for major sections of the fic really made me appreciate them more.

Hardest story to write:

"Crashing [...]" has remained an absolute bear to write as I've often been discouraged while writing it. Plotting is really hard and the longer this fic goes on without resolution the more embarrassed I feel that it's taking so long for a product I'm not proud of anymore. This started as my idfic baby and now I just want it to be over with.

Biggest disappointment:

My biggest disappointments all come from forcing myself to write when I wasn't feeling it. I think my ZS fic "Get Home" isn't that good and had I more time I would write a much longer fic exploring both Phi and Sean's post-canon conundrums and their relationship.

Biggest surprise:

I am continually surprised and grateful that anyone reads my fics and likes them. I truly do appreciate every single lurker, commenter, and kudos-er.

Most unintentionally telling story:

I think any of my fics with Phi. Her social interactions, interests, introspection, and self-image are very similar to mine because tbh I'm an obnoxious Phi soulbonder.

Favorite opening line(s):

From "Hollow Body Weather" because this is just cute:

Aoi's in the kitchen but banned from cooking for the night, so instead he sits at the island counter and admires Carlos' shoulders moving under his shirt. Mikan, their cat, sits at Carlos’ feet hoping for salmon. She’s round and orange as a mandarin and Aoi’s the reason she’s spoiled.

Favorite closing line(s):

From "Far away in my well-lit door:"

"Do you think it'll be okay?" he asks her in bed that night.

Hazuki starts to say 'It was okay for me--' before realizing he isn't talking about sex. (She wrote him off as a brute early on but he's attentive and a quick learner. A long time ago he confessed he's been married before and his wife clearly put in a lot of instruction time.)

"I have no idea." She finds his hand in the sheets and holds it despite their obvious size difference. "I just know we have to try." She wants a world with him, after all. He doesn’t even know what soup plates are. They have a lot more dining out to do.

Favorite 5 line(s) from anywhere:

1. From "Hollow Body Weather:"

So when the Carlos from another history asks him, Aoi says he doesn’t remember how they got together. It’s not this Carlos’ story to hear.

2. From "Crashing [...]:"

“I wish you would put it differently, that’s bad luck,” Akane said.

“What? It’s a figure of speech,” Phi said. “Or are you an old lady already?”

“She does keep an old woman’s schedule,” Junpei interjected and to his surprise Phi didn’t glower at him or ignore him; instead she laughed.

Akane balled her hands up into fists. “Oh stop it!”

“Careful, you’ll get wrinkles if you make that face,” Phi said, smiling at Akane before turning back to the screens.

3. From "Little Girl [...]:"

Chess isn’t violent but it has an element of skill [Octavia] respects. Indra taught her to fight but she would also ask Octavia “What-if?” questions about battlefield scenarios. Would she save a fallen comrade and risk both of them dying, or abandon them so she could live and tell the rest of her party where the enemy was? Things like that. Chess requires this sort of thinking. As Octavia plays she feels like old muscles are unknotting, awakening.

4. From "mouth read this truth:"

He would hand-feed her and the baby chocolate forever if she smiled and laughed just like she had in his memories. If they could pretend that a little bluebird would arrive to save them any moment, heralding their bright future.

5. From "man of three fears [...]:"

At the very least he was satisfied with the knowledge that if anyone threatened him or Akane, investigators would find both of the couple's fingerprints on the axe handle.

Top 5 scenes from anywhere you would choose to have illustrated from anywhere:

1. Anything from "Daffodil," I love that whole fic
2. Carlos and Aoi bathing scene from "Hollow Body Weather"
3. Phi and Junpei in the office from Chapter 1 of "Smoke, Mirrors"
4. Carlos braiding Akane's hair in "Ribcage Braid"
5. Akane/Phi NSFW in "Come On Fire"

Fic-writing goals for next year:

Finish "Crashing" so I can say I'm done with it, I can't wait to be done lmao. And write more non-ZE fandoms (I've gotten started with this already by posting an NG fic.)
