end of the year fic meme 2020

End of the year fic meme, taken from Riona:

Number of fics written in 2020: 18, though I did cheat and count fics POSTED in 2020 even if they were written in another year, just for the sake of talking about my total fandom output in 2020. I did not include fics that were posted in other years but had updates this year. | AO3 account: [archiveofourown.org profile] morphogenesis

Fandoms: Spirit Hunter: NG, Zero Escape, Exist-Archive, Life Is Strange. I only like video games apparently.

Best title: Got a soft spot for "eastbound, petrified forest," "Leave It Unmapped," "Creatures of Love," "The Fire Sermon," and "The Utpala Hell." IF I HAD TO PICK I'll go "Utpala Hell" because I really really love pretentious Buddhism references apparently.

Worst title: "large black coffee, double shot" isn't great? And I literally had no idea what to call the Exist-Archive fic so I called it "Rend." I guess Kiriya gets stabbed so it vaguely connects?

Best first line: From "Rend:" "Kiriya pulls the knife from his side, hissing at the way it grinds against his ribs." I was once told (okay, many times told) that my writing doesn't really have lines that can be singled out, if that makes sense? Not "You have no memorable lines," but "All of the lines need to be in context and that isn't bad." This one, I feel, is good though.

Worst first line: From "The Utpala Hell:" "The alley is quiet now." thanks.

Best last line: From "big bad wolf & cub:" "It is such a long hike back to normal, and he doesn't know if he'll ever arrive, but he wants to make sure Ami does."

Worst last line: From "eastbound, petrified forest" and others because I also do this too much: "He smiles."

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted? I'm surprised I posted so much new stuff, because I did spend a lot of time this year finishing WIPs like "Crashing in the Name of Science" (!!!!), "Smoke, Mirrors," and "Splinter from the headboard in my eye," to name a few. now i only have 8 or 9 wips on ao3. cries.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Pairing: I never thought my Ema/Kiriya fic, "Rend," would see the light of day, so.

Genre: Everything I wrote this year was p in my wheelhouse tbh! Mysteries/scifi. Oh wait, except for the poorly-executed crime subplot in "Creatures of Love."

Fandom: Spirit Hunter: NG! I love love love Spirit Hunter, played NG in October 2019 and thought, "Yes, what a good game," and then promptly shelved it until I wrote a random warm-up drabble in January 2020, and then in December 2020 it's like my brain flipped a switch and I became obsessed and just Had to write a multi-chapter post-canon future fic for it. Thus we got "The Utpala Hell."

What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

This one is SO HARD because I wrote a couple that I really loved! I'll pick the iddiest one, "Creatures of Love," the sequel to "Crashing" that has entirely too many children. Honorable Mentions: "The Utpala Hell" and "The Fire Sermon" and "eastbound, petrified forest."

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

By kudos: "large black coffee, double shot" (C-Team OT3, so to be expected.)
By comments: "The Fire Sermon" (hell yeah)
By subscriptions: "Gethsemane" (this genuinely surprises me)
By bookmarks: "Leave It Unmapped" (ditto)

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

"Hideaway" but I expected that because it contains incest. The only comment is someone informing me that incest is disgusting. Also how the fuck did I write ZE C-Team OT3 porn that got like no attention aka "One To Shake You Down." I did however get a REALLY lovely comment on it so that was enough.

Story that could have been better?

"Waking The Witch" was probably better off not posted, tbh. I posted the ~20k I had before I abandoned the idea and rereading it I'm like. "Oh yeah. This isn't that good." The first chapter is a retelling of Episode 1 of LIS and everything that follows is all over the place in terms of tone and characterization and plot.

Sexiest story?

Ironically the Actual Porn I wrote this year doesn't feel very sexy! I just like writing awkward sex too much and I doubt anyone got hot and bothered by Junpei and Akane having a broken condom fiasco in "Give Me Pieces." The most sensual one is for sure "eastbound, petrified forest" where Diana takes Carlos' virginity on a road trip. Kiriya and Ema making out in "Rend" wasn't bad though.

Saddest story?

None of them feel particularly sad to me! I'd say there are more sad moments, like Phi Senior breaking down in "Leave It Unmapped," or Akira's quarter-life crisis in "The Utpala Hell" (which is only about to get worse so buckle up.)

Most fun?

To write? "Gethsemane!" It's "Phi and Sigma re-enact an X-Files episode, with a twist." Though "Leave It Unmapped" is pretty fun for Phi and Junpei gen, my fanon dream team.

Story with single sweetest moment?

"big bad wolf & cub" is just tooth-rotting Kijima siblings fluff, and my favorite bit is probably Akira teaching Ami to throw a punch.

Most fucked-up story?

A lot of people would say "Hideaway" for the incest, I say "The Fire Sermon" because it's all about childhood traumas and an evil timeline version of Akane using Sex and Esper Brainwashing to keep Junpei in her thrall.

Hardest story to write?

Either of the Aoilight fics, "Carbon and Bluebird" and "Stochastic Resonance," because the ship itself makes me want to pull my hair out now but the dynamic is also too much fun to stop. (I don't hate it at all, I really used to love it, but I've cooled on it considerably and find it a bit stressful to write. I'm married to the fic ideas, so I write.)

Easiest/most fun story to write?

"Creatures of Love," though it's proving a pain to finish! It's my purest id and holy shit someone has actually read it.

Did any stories shift your perception of the characters?

"The Utpala Hell" is just one massive crash course in "How to write literally anything that isn't Zero Escape" and thus it's hard to get into character sometimes. Specifically, Hazuki is very very hard to write!!! But my regular commenter on that fic says they love the way I write her. ;_; So the more I build on what I Think she'd be like ten years post-canon, the more I'm warming to her.

Most overdue story?

FINISHING "CRASHING." "Carbon and Bluebird," the sequel to "Daffodil Like Yourself!"

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

This year my lesson was "Be truly self-indulgent." Post porn! Write characters acting OOC! Include too many kid OCs! Make Akira Kijima a yakuza! Write sequels to your own fics! Show off your unfinished drafts! ENJOY YOURSELF GODDAMN IT IT'S JUST FANFICTION.
