In one world, Carlos gets dragged into helping Aoi investigate a string of incendiary attacks on Crash Keys’ property, and stumbles across a larger mystery when he realizes he’s never meeting the same Aoi twice.

In another world, Aoi just wants to stop constantly SHIFTing through time and space, protect his family, and resist falling for Carlos.

These worlds intertwine and everything goes up in flames. A story told up, down, and sideways through time.

Written March 2017 - April 2020! It's done! I am free!

A tiny post-mortem below:

This fic ended so much differently than I envisioned when it began, though now I don't quite remember everything I intended back in 2017. I started it for a friend and it was never supposed to be more than a bunch of unconnected drabbles. Then I wrote Chapter 2 where a young Aoi SHIFTs to a time post-Second Nonary Game and was like "There might be a larger story here."

I'm not sure why all the arson and fire science (and complaining about bad fire science), but I love fire science and all the related drama so I was like !!! when I came up with the plot about incendiary attacks on Crash Keys. Also I cannot write Carlos and not have him talk about this because I headcanon he has both personal and professional interests in it.

You can watch my style change as you read; the earlier chapters are longer because tbh I still struggle with the assumption that "Longer = Better." I'm trying to shake that because it makes my writing feel bloated and I hate reading long chapters anyway. Am I 1000% happy with the changes? No, but they happened and I can always work on craft if I don't like what I'm currently doing.

It's Carlos/Aoi because my friend was into the ship at the time and I went, "Never thought about it but OK, I'll write for Riley. :>" I ended up really liking them and am happy with what I did. I liked the ship so much I wrote a side story for this one called "Hollow Body Weather" and it's also on AO3. It's a more shameless romance novel.

If I could go back in time I'd outline more from the beginning in order to really tighten up the timeline and pacing and antagonist's motivation. I think the ending would have more impact if I had, but I was less experienced with writing proper plotfic and tbh it took me until "Daffodil Like Yourself" to even outline correctly, So.

I'd be remiss not to mention the structure of this fic was inspired by Eternal Return, a Life Is Strange fic by notoriousjae. I'm still in awe of their end product.

So now I'm down to only 2 WIPs on AO3 and then I can, like, take a break? From fandom? It's what I'm pondering. I feel like I've got a few more ZE fics in me but I'm unsure if I want to keep dumping energy into this fandom, but idk where else I'd write.
